Introducing Madan Kamdev: Mini Khajuraho of Assam

Often overlooked in favour of more popular sites, Madan Kamdev, is a hidden treasure located about 30 kilometres from the capital city of Assam, Guwahati. Popularly called, the Khajuraho of Assam, this archaeological wonder is situated  in Baihata Chariali of Kamrup District. Within just  an hour drive from the city, this hidden gem offers a peek into Assam’s rich history. Dated back to 9th to 12th centuries, the place is home to ancient stone carvings and temple ruins.

Madan Kamdev

Scattered widely on Devangiri hillock, covering 500 meters, Madan Kamdev is famous for its impressive temple ruins and stone carvings. The exact history of the origin of the temples is not known, but it has been estimated that the temple complex was built in 9th-10th century during Pal dynasty of Kamarupa. People were not aware of Madan Kamdev till 1970 because the ruins were hidden in the trees and bushes of the thick forest. In 1977, the Archaeological Directorate of Assam took over the responsibility for this area.

Notable to mention, Madan Kamdev complex has ruins of 13 temples. Madan Kamdev Temple is the main temple, which displayed a sculpture of Lord Shiva with his consort Parvati. The sculptures in the temples portray expressions of erotic acts which can be seen only in the famous Khajuraho temples of Madhya Pradesh.

Some other interesting sculptures seen here are Statues of Bhairav with six heads, a four-headed Shiva, Kalpavriksha, Sun various Apsara, Vishnu with six heads, Saraswati and various other statues of animals . Walking through the site feels like wandering through open-air museum, where every corner reveals  a new history waiting to be discovered. There is an old temple of Shiva called Gopeshpur Temple nearby, which is also worth a visit.
